Friday the 13th of June saw the first Amwell Nature Reserve Moth Event. Colin Plant and a select group of keen moth'ers had a great evening. Stay tuned to this page for news of future events. The reserve is in Stanstead Abbotts, Hertfordshire and here's a map highlighting where to park and walk. Its a great reserve with a huge array of wildlife that can be seen throughout the year.
"Here is the list from last night at the Amwell Pits Nature Reserve, near Hertford. Not bad, but could have been better. Eight of us ran 3 Robinson-pattern traps, a vertical sheet behind a 125 watt mv bulb and three 15-watt actinic traps. Lights ran from 21.45 to around 02.00 when the threat of rain caused us to wimp out. We managed 116 species overall, but of these the macros are only in the low eighties. A couple of micros remain to be named by (eventual) dissection. Highlights include a Red-necked Footman and a White-point which two, in harmony with the single Silver Y, suggest immigration. Resident wetland species include, in the list below, 1292, 1328, 1330, 1348, 1350, 2204, 2197, 2418 and 2493. Interestingly, there is also a good complement of woodland species, such as 1667, 1944, 2037 and 2410, suggesting that this was a night when moths were moving around the landscape (something which is, frequently, coincident with the arrival of immigrants). Thanks to those who attended and helped out with the gear. I remain unable to fix dates in advance for moth trips as I am too busy with work, but if people are happy to watch out for impromptu trips advertised on this group then I will continue to do so"
